Work should demonstrate a deep understanding and near comprehensive knowledge of the
subject. It should show significant originality in interpretation and analysis. The essay or
dissertation should have a coherent structure, demonstrate exceptional synthesis of primary
and secondary research, and show overwhelming evidence of in-depth reading with clear
indications of substantial research beyond the reading lists. Its presentation should be as near
perfect as possible, with a written style that is incisive and fluent. In general, an upper first class
should be of a quality that is considered worthy of publication or retention for future reference,
either for research or teaching.
